Modern Hire released Automated Interview Scoring, a feature for on-demand video interviews that uses artificial intelligence to evaluate candidate responses and provide employers with recommended scores to help ensure a hiring process that’s more fair and unbiased.

Using Industrial organizational psychology methods and AI, AIS “replicates” the judgment of professionally trained experts, Modern Hire said.

“Interviewing is a traditionally subjective and biased process, which can lead to interviewers incorporating factors that are unrelated to the job into their evaluation of candidates due to unconscious bias,” said Mike Hudy, the company’s chief science officer. “AIS removes the subjective, biased nature of the interviewing process, enabling interviewers to use AI to make more consistent and informed hiring decisions.”

A big part of Modern Hire’s approach is about transparency. Before beginning a video interview with AIS, candidates are provided with an explanation of how the AI works. Candidates must consent to AI being used in their interview, and can opt out and continue with the interview process, if they wish.

Staying On-Topic

The product’s AI doesn’t consider the candidate’s image, such as facial expressions or voice, when evaluating candidate responses. Relying on interview transcripts, AIS uses AI to assess each candidate’s response on job-relevant content, evaluating responses against the core competencies required to succeed at a particular job.

“AI can help us solve some hard problems, and the lack of equity and fairness in hiring is an important issue to fix,” said CEO Karin Borchert. “We’re excited about adding this rating recommendation as a native feature of our on-demand video interview solution so that all of our clients can benefit from this powerful technology.”

In May, Modern Hire announced an integration with recruiting platform Greenhouse, which introduced an automated process for submitting on-demand video, voice and text interviews, live interviews and assessments within Greenhouse workflows. In addition, the integration reduces the administrative burden on recruiters Modern Hire said, freeing them to take on more strategic tasks within their organization.
