We all want to do cold outreach easier. Nobody wants to spend hours hunting down the perfect candidate when you can just cold blast 1000 developers some outreach and see who nibbles. That’s where this dirty trick comes into play. Mastering the tools of the trade is vital for any career, and when it comes to Xray, sourcing is no different. So, what’s this big mysterious technique to source developer emails?

It’s nothing too crazy. However, we are combining it with an interesting Chrome extension.  The gist of it is to create a fairly simple Google Xray string phrased like this:

site:github.com language:java AND “@gmail.com”

Like we said, nothing too crazy.

The fun part is when you add in this pretty neat Chrome Extension called Email Extractor. If you’re trying to speed up your headhunting, this puppy is a great tool to have in your belt. It will automatically comb through whatever page you are on and return all of the email addresses on screen. Neat, right?

A little nuance with Google is that it usually doesn’t show everything all at once, it drip feeds search results in small batches. Annoying. But, we have technology. To display all of the content on a Google page faster, you can take an extra step and add uAutoPagerize to your Chrome browser. That will automatically display all “unloaded” content. Now, when you click on Email Extractor it should have way more results. Booya.

Take this more as a building block than a step by step guide.  Be creative with your Boolean strings so you can get results that are different from other people. The more refined your search, the more likely you’re going to source developer emails that haven’t been bothered into oblivion.

Happy hunting!

Google CSE (custom search engines) are an amazing way to focus and limit your searches to just the relevant databases.

Just want to search Github, Stackoverflow, and Hacker News? Create a custom search engine for that!

Trying to narrow down your focus on designers to just Behance and Dribbble? Just eliminate all the other websites and you’re in business!

    • A Google Custom Search can x-ray Linkedin, filtering the results based on the primary geographies where you are focusing your search.
    • Add “refinements” to build collections of websites and add extra keywords to your search automatically.
    • Create custom-saved search shortcuts that prompt for keywords, so you don’t have to memorize Boolean and other syntax.
    • Be more productive with the Favorites and other toolbars.
    • Have fresh search engine results emailed to you daily or weekly.
    • Capture all your custom search engine results with one click directly into a spreadsheet you can import with any CRM.

For any outreach expert, email validation is one of those things that you can’t skip out on. Your outreach campaign could fall on deaf ears if you don’t weed out the bad contacts from the good. Every email address has an attached reputation, and having a spotless record is the cornerstone of outreach success. This raises an important question: how would one check the reputations of their contacts? The solution is none other than Google Sheets email validation.

Most people solve this problem by running their list through a validation app, usually a paid one. But what if you could validate emails for free from the comforts of your all-too-familiar Google Sheet? Well, There’s a neat little feature in Google Sheets to help you easily validate emails right in the spreadsheet. Simply put all the emails in a separate cell and then hover over each. Near instantly, the full contact card will [hopefully] pop up on your screen.

If nothing comes up, that means Google doesn’t have any info tied to that address. While that doesn’t necessarily make it an invalid address, any populated information suggests that the contact is an actual human being. From phone number to workplace, you can get a surprisingly good amount of details from Google Sheets email validation.

Email Validation can get quite tedious, so don’t bother with those third party applications if you’re already in a Google Sheet.

Every recruiter hits a point in their career where they go, “I love how I can search millions of people on LinkedIn. But there has to be a better way!” Free Simple People Search Tool is the answer.

It’s simple. It’s fast. And it’s absolutely free. Now that’s a combo you’re bound to fall in love with at first sight!

But that’s not all. Since we last covered this tool back in 2019, it’s come a long way. The latest version has everything we loved about this nifty piece of software, only now it’s many times bigger and better.

Let us elaborate. Where you could only start your search with LinkedIn profiles, you can take things to the next level by starting at any of the following websites:

  • Twitter
  • GitHub
  • Dribble
  • And of course, LinkedIn!

You get a simple but incredibly powerful search bar to find profiles on any of those four platforms. The official x-ray search guide will help you create boolean search queries that will—to take a phrase from the Irish—impress the bejesus out of your colleagues.

Have you tried searching people up on Dribble? Trust us, few things are harder than finding profiles on that platform. But with People Search Tool, it’s more enjoyable than a cool summer breeze.

In short, if you want to x-ray search the profiles on social media but don’t want to pay a hefty premium for the official search tools, you’re going to love the Free People Search Tool.

It’s infinitely better than the unreliable art of Google-Fu when it comes to manually searching profiles online!

Increase productivity and reduce browser clutter with temporary bookmarks

Take a moment and look at your bookmarks folder. Is it full of old links that you didn’t need to keep, but you saved anyhow since you were in the middle of a search and didn’t want to lose those pages? Do all your bookmarks spark joy? Kidding. Sort of.

In this video, Dean takes us through a few different free Chrome extensions that allow you to save your bookmarks temporarily, rather than actually save them into your bookmarks folder. This allows you to keep your primary bookmarks nice and neat, without a lot of clutter from random saved searches.

First, we have a Chrome extension called Temporary Bookmarks. This simple extension allows you to save pages for up to 2 weeks. Choose the number of days between 1 and 14, and you’re ready to create your list. If you want to save a page, use either right-click and add that way, or by using the extension icon in your browser by clicking the plus sign. When you view your list the tool will display a trash can with the number of days remaining before they expire. It’s simple, direct and to the point.

The second extension is also called Temporary Bookmarks. This extension works similarly but is one you would use if you want to keep your links for more than 14 days. The settings for these bookmarks allow you to keep links for up to 365 days instead, and you can set expiration notifications, in case you change your mind and want to save them for longer. You can also delete using the trash icon before it expires if you want. This extension is also simple to use, and the notification flag option is nice.

Third, we have the Chrome extension Temporary Bookmarks. (I know, everyone is very clever with these extension names!) This extension works a bit differently with custom options for the temporary folder. Add links through a right-click menu or through the extension icon in your browser. You can have the link auto-delete once you click on it, or choose to delete one by one. Trash them line by line with or without deletion confirmations. This is nice if you use it for recurring projects but still wish to keep everything separate from your main bookmarks.

Finally, you can choose to utilize one or all of these extensions for your bookmarking needs. If you do use more than one, just keep track of the different extension icons so you know which temporary spot you’re choosing! It’s a great way to keep yourself organized, which as you know saves time and effort in the long run.

Free People Search Tool is a fairly simple tool, but it cuts steps and time out of your search process. Basically, the tool is a custom search engine that searches through LinkedIn. However, in order to use the tool, you do not have to sign in to LinkedIn or pay, saving you time and money.

The setup of the tool is like any standard search engine. It consists of a search bar, and provides a few specifications.

  • Location options allow you to narrow your results based on country.
  • You can choose between showing results in terms of Relevance or Date.

You can use the search engine to search by name, role, location, or company.

The simplicity of its process may be Free People Search Tool’s greatest strength. It doesn’t bog you down with innumerable choices, making it easier than ever to find what you’re looking for.

Though the tool does not really allow you to do anything you couldn’t do directly from LinkedIn, it does make it faster and simpler, try it. ~ Noel Cocca

Custom Search Engine via Dean Da Costa to find phone numbers

Genealogic is a site that stores information—mostly addresses and phones numbers—for a massive quantity of people globally. However, navigating the site itself is a bit difficult, and can take much longer than it should. From the site itself, you have to search through individual locations, and oftentimes the searches come up empty.

However, Dean Da Costa has created a Custom Search Engine for Genealogic that makes searching through this site much easier. This is a fairly simple tool—just an X-ray search of the Genealogic site—but it can save you a lot of time in the search process.

  • Using the Custom Search Engine, simply enter the last name of the person you wish to search for.
  • Choose the search result that seems closest to your goal; even if the exact match does not appear, you can still easily navigate from a name that is similar.
  • Once on the site, check if your desired person is displayed. If not, scroll to the bottom and try choosing a name or location that may help narrow it down.
  • Once you locate the correct person within Genealogic, you will see the person’s address and phone number!

Though beginning your search directly within Genealogic may allow you to find the correct contact, using the Custom Search Engine can streamline the process and provide more accurate results.

Genealogic contains a lot of valuable information, and this Custom Search Engine is ready for you to use. ~ Noel Cocca

I’m a Hustler Baby

It’s all about the Mckinley’s, (that’s the $500 bill), albeit discontinued in 1969 it’s still legal tender and worth 5 X that of your Benji. It’s old school yes, but legal and at the least pretty damn awesome to have one of those sitting in your pocket. It’s the Google of search, the Bing of photos and the cheese to a Philly Cheesesteak. Too much?

At heart, recruiters are hustlers. We are networking Gods with egos bigger than most peoples tax returns. We are a breed of old school with a new school flare that loves to hold a phone, push buttons and dial our way to profitability. In other words, sitting back with our feet up, waiting for leads to filter in through our amazing website isn’t much of an option. FOMAC sets in (Fear of missing a conversation), and for good reason, it’s our livelihood.

Passive Marketing Strategies Are Scary

Let us call it what it is. It’s scary to try new things. Failure is not for everyone. This isn’t a Gary Vaynerchuck or ET video where failure is the next success. I get it, failure breeds success but for the 98% of us that live the dream working for the corporate beast we don’t get the luxury to fail gloriously and call it a win.

Because FOMAC has ruled the world and everything in it (sing it), the skys the limit. You can push it in recruitment when it comes to implementing new strategies into your staffing business, large and small because, well, most organizations haven’t even begun the conversation.

The Process of Getting Traffic

SEO is not just 3 letters strung together to form a cool acronym. It has real value to your online footprint, to be honest, it’s what your missing to drive what can be an amazing amount targeted eyeballs to your content. SEO is not simple to master but if you can learn enough to be dangerous, as a recruiter, your pocketbook can recognize a significant bump over your earnings from last year.

There are thousands, literally, of ways that you can combine a number of efforts to increase your SEO value within your network of sites and there are many great articles available to that outline that process or contract types that you can bring into your organization. But for those that are resistant to considering the value and to those that say my audience is unique, here are a few key stats to consider.

Executive Search Firm: IT Sector

Suppose you are an executive search firm specializing in the IT sector. Popular belief is that most firms within this subset are nearly non-existent online. You, as well as I know that this is not the case. Most Grandparents, if not Great Grandparent are online at this point. But let’s not take innuendo as the new non-fake news.

Here are the 2 tools that we’ll look at:

  1. Google Adwords
  2. Keyword planner tool

We start our investigation by creating a Google AdWords account and loading the Keyword Planner tool (under the Tools menu option).

We enter “executive search IT” into the first section of the tool labeled “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category”. Google gives us a huge list of potential search terms we might want to target, some of which are relevant to our business.

After paring down the list, we end up with the following keywords:

  • executive IT recruiters
  • headhunter IT
  • headhunter IT management
  • recruitment IT
  • IT executive job search
  • IT executive jobs
  • IT executive recruiters
  • IT executive search
  • IT executive search firms
  • IT headhunters
  • IT job recruiters
  • IT management headhunters
  • IT management recruiters
  • IT management recruitment agencies
  • IT recruiting firms
  • IT recruitment
  • IT recruitment agencies
  • IT search firms

We take those terms and enter them into the second section of the Keyword Planner tool labeled “Get search volume using data and trends” and we immediately discover that there are around 15,750 searches per month for these keywords. That’s a pretty good volume for all of which we are not being found by people in our local area searching for content, service providers or jobs.

We also get a more granular look at which keywords provide the greatest opportunities so we know what to target.

4% Is Our Goal

And just like that, powered by the magic of blogging our content and SEO plan is fully baked and out of the SEO oven. Here are some great articles on how to do this in real time (it’s far from magic and close to hard)

Now that we’ve invested many hours in planning, content and execution we’ve made it to the front page of Google ranking on average in 6th position for most of the list above. According to Moz, when you rank in the sixth position for a Google search, you can expect to receive about 4% of the clicks for a given term.

Using simple arithmetic and the numbers  above if this holds true we are going to see some sick traffic from our efforts.

15,750 searches

We can expect 630 site visitors per month from Google traffic (SEO not paid)

If we can work at industry average on conversion we should see a .5% conversion rate on traffic to clients

This will equal 3 new monthly clients for a turn rate of about 36 new clients per year.

Nuff’ said.

Wasting time trying to source chrome extensions or sourcing tools? You’re not alone. It’s not uncommon to hear sourcers practically interrogating each other on their chrome extensions. These digital hacks are their lifeline – a key into speed, digital agility and keeping a job in the first place.

Unfortunately, the advice can be short lived as one tool is acquired or updated leaving it pretty much useless. Then, we’re back to the drawing boards posting and praying that someone will share a relevant and free tool . Today, those conversations are happening daily across social media in sourcing communities on Facebook.

One of these conversations led to a reveal, of sorts, by Steve Levy and Dean Da Costa. If you know Dean Da Costa, you know he’s the King of Chrome extensions and sourcing tools. The guy has thousands of extensions – and he actually knows how to use them and which ones are worth the memory, too.  We feel pretty lucky that he takes the time to share his savvy on our sourcing webinars to show you how to save money and time discovering candidate contact information. But enough Dean admiration, back to the reveal part, since that’s why you’re still here.

Dean shared a list of his current Chrome extensions. Soon after, everyone went nuts. Why? It’s simple. Sharing is caring. We don’t always get to see “under the hood” outside the context of a webinar or sponsored content. So today, we’re going to share his extension lists so you can bookmark it for the next time one of your tools breaks or you’re on the hunt for suggestions.

Oh, and if you want to be part of the conversation live – you should probably just join  The Secret Sourcing Group.

Dean Da Costa’s Chrome Extensions (April 2016)

In no particular order, here are the extensions Dean shared. Be warned, this list is extensive…. and it’s only 30% of his list.

*Note: We plan to do a more extensive breakdown of these tools as we test them – stay tuned!

As a recruiter, Chrome extensions can be your best friend. From browsers extensions to speed to security and add-on’s, Chrome is a serious contender to the king of browser extensions; FireFox. With extensions however come conflicts, and with conflicts come slow CPU’s and with slow CPU’s comes a really pissed off recruiter. Learn how to get the most from Chrome Extensions

Malware is prevalent among many extensions in Chrome. It’s been a key focus of Google to eradicate this but to no avail they still remain. Long story short, you need to be cautious. These add-on’s that are filled with suspicious software, however, are not truly malicious, rather they are aggregators of data that generate revenue from your clicks through non-visible adds.

Throughout this series Dean DaCosta will discuss:

  • Browser level security
  • Chrome extensions and add-on’s
  • How to set up and maintain a clean browser environment to prevent adware and spyware bots

How to setup and maintain a clean browser environment

Changes planned for April 21 are going to have a significant impact on many recruitment firms. Mobilegeddon CommscoreCorporate recruiters aren’t agreeing to a universal flat fee or proposing all contractors be made permanent employees, instead it is something called mobilegeddon!

Mobilegeddon

Mobilegeddon is a Google Search Algorithm change that is predicted to have a dramatic impact on the visibility of websites from mobile devices. Sites that will be affected by this Google change are those that aren’t currently responsive / optimized for mobile.

So whilst websites will remain visible on desktops, those that Google doesn’t deem to be mobile friendly will be harder to find for mobile users. Five years ago this change wouldn’t have been significant, but in 2015 mobile users now make up a significant proportion of web traffic, even reported to have surpassed desktop by some sources.

I’m predicting the recruitment sector will be hit particularly hard by this change because the standard of agency websites is generally poor (my experience / opinion).

If you wish to know if your website is responsive, search for your site from Google on your mobile, it will say Mobile-friendly if it is. Also if you find yourself having to pinch the screen to read the text on your site, it is a good sign that it isn’t responsive.

Don’t Panic

The good news is that having regularly reviewed the website analytics of our clients, only around 30-40% of website traffic comes from Google or Bing, or maybe even Yahoo. The rest comes from job boards, paid marketing and social media (providing you have a good social strategy in place). In addition the upcoming Google changes will probably take some time to come into full effect. These points aside if your website isn’t responsive now would definitely be a good time to look at changing it!

Mobilegeddon Mobile Friendly

Great Recruitment Websites

If you are considering a new website for your agency, don’t fall into the trap of creating a site that will appear dated almost as soon as it is launched. Websites are now central to your brand’s marketing strategy and need to be built to allow your business to successfully leverage a wide range of tools.

For the last few weeks I’ve been looking both nationally and internationally for great (not just good) agency websites. The reality is that this has been surprisingly challenging, every time I think I’ve found one there are always a few things that are missing. Therefore here is our guide on what should be included on a great recruitment website (in order of priority):

  • Responsive / Mobile Optimised – Hopefully by now you get the importance of this point
  • Easily Searchable Jobs – After all this is why most users are visiting your site
  • A Clear Content Strategy – This is what makes your agency unique and should be aligned with your overall Digital Marketing Strategy
  • Regularly Updated Content – Website SEO is positively influenced by regular content updates, blogs give sites 434% more indexed pages and 97% more indexed links
  • Well Written Meta Tags & Page Titles – SEO basics that are often missed or not written specifically for the recruitment sector
  • Site Analytics – These are the background of all online marketing. Is your page registered with Google Analytics? Do you know how to access the data? Do you know what this data means? Are you tracking conversion rates?
  • User Experience – Candidates know they are in demand and therefore are unlikely to fill in four pages of forms to apply. Integrated social media apply buttons are a great solution, but also ensure the website is easily navigable.
  • Content Management System – A good CMS makes all the difference, allowing non-technical users to quickly upload blogs or make content changes.
  • Visible Contact Details – Avoid sending users to a contact page, make these details obvious, ideally with hyperlinks for mobile users
  • Social Integration – Your website should encourage users to engage with your brand and to visit from your social pages. Are users given reasons to join your social communities and are they actively encouraged to do so? Are your blogs RSS compatible?
  • Credible Recommendations – Show clients and candidates that others trust your brand
  • Bespoke Imagery – Obvious stock photography is rubbish! Spend a bit of cash on your own images or high quality stock.
  • Jobs Optimised For Sharing – If a user is on one of your jobs, can they quickly and easily share it on Twitter of Facebook? Do your jobs share to Facebook with images?
  • AdWords Integration – Is your site setup to re-target previous website visitors? In general only 10% of websiteusers convert, are you marketing your jobs to the other 90%? Watch out for a blog on how to do this over the next few weeks
  • Video – Video is quickly gaining momentum as one of the key online mediums. Most websites can host video, but ensure you first have a video marketing strategy?
  • Landing Pages – Modern recruitment websites need to have marketing functionality in-built. Landing pages are a crucial part of this process.
  • Content Marketing – Having valuable content available to attract visitors and capture their details helps to make business development and candidate acquisition easier
  • Database Integration – Applications should be loaded directly to the recruitment database and consultants should be able to post jobs to the website and third party job boards from one place.

Recruitment Website Examples

Here is a list of good recruitment websites that was put together in 2013 by EchoGravity, for me most of these sites fall short in key areas. Instead we would love to receive your submissions for a new list, the first one I’ll include is Spencer Ogden, a medium sized energy recruiter from the UK.

  1. Spencer Ogden
  2. ?

Concluding Thoughts

As an industry we appear to be coming around to the idea that a recruitment agency’s website should be at the centre of all marketing activities. Once a good website is in place it allows agencies to use social and digital marketing to build a strong online brand identity.

From experience I would suggest a good website should start at $10k and could go through to $30k+, depending on the required features and size of your organisation. A large chunk of this expenditure should be committed to early stage analysis and planning to ensure the site fits with your previously decided Digital Marketing Strategy.

FerrisThe Google Wonder Wheel made its first appearance over a year ago, but I haven’t heard much of any talk about sourcers using the tool to gather information.  I use the tool regularly to gather key information of   keywords and search criteria that I might not be overly familiar with.

The 1:55 second video below shoes it in action and in real time, so you can see how quickly it provides a nice set of results.

Read about other Keyword tools here.

Why I like the Wonder Wheel:

  • Keyword research
  • Key search phrases being searched by others
  • Keyword links and associations
  • Key Phrase variables

Take a look and share with your recruiting friends.

Searching online can be a bit scary for recruiters if they are not accustomed to queries and weird languages that only the depths of the internet can understand.  Enter the term “Efficiency”. google_search_tricks1

It’s not mandatory that you become a wizard of Boolean to master online search. You do however need to get organized and work efficiently.  Here’s the first in a series on how to get efficient with Google. Each post will contain 7 keys to staying efficient with Google Search and maybe include a video or two. Enjoy.

  1. Get familiar with Google advanced search. You’ll be able to break out your Boolean searches, target date ranges, time frames and control the results set that are return based on time and numbers.
  2. A lot of recruiters ask me frequently what the + will do in a Google query. The answer is that it will be sure to tell your search to include stop words. Google Stop words are those common words that you use in everyday language. There is however a place and time to include them in your search.  A common list can be found here.
  3. Google has the ability to recognize filetypes in your search. This limits your search so use it wisely. Most recruiters focus on the better known filetypes like doc, xls and pdf. Google will recognize 13 filetypes including all of the Microsoft office extensions as well as, Lotus, PostScript, Shockwave Flash and plain text files.
  4. Similar to the use of intitle: and inurl: you can also search blogs directly from Google Blog Search with inblogtitle:<keyword>
  5. Search within your returned results to drill deep into a set of targeted results. Scroll down to the bottom of your results page and you will see “search within your results” (see video below)
  6. If you are specifically targeting individuals and you want to ensure a face photo, you can tell your Google Image Search that you only want to see results that host images of people. Simply add this: &imgtype=face to the end of your returned result in the URL bar.
  7. Google has a trending search as well. Try searching with Google Trends to uncover the hottest search trends, insights and regional based searches.

Sourcing with Google Images to uncover "Hidden Talent" https://recruitingdaily.com/sourcing-with-google-images-to-uncover-hidden-talent/ Tue, 26 Jan 2010 05:20:14 +0000 https://recruitingdaily.com/sourcing-with-google-images-to-uncover-hidden-talent/ Sourcers will stop at nothing to uncover hidden talent. We are constantly looking to unveil new ways to source. More often than not the channels we search for everyday items online can be used to source talent online as well. It’s an approach I like to call common sense. Some of the methods walk the line of compliance but that’s your call. Google Images can help.

Use Image Search to Find “Hidden” Candidates As recruiters, we spend a lot of time constructing our search strings to target Google-Gates “human capital”. It’s a people business. For example, running an “intitle:resume” search on Google will find resumes. Or you could add more keywords to your search to find a “curriculum vitae” and even more keywords if you want to find a candidate “Bio”.

The Restrictions of Text-Only Based Search When it comes to Boolean searches, they all come with inherent limitations. For each candidate search, there will be candidates that can not be found. In fact, some candidates may not even use any normal permutations; and may simply upload a resume titled “Dave’s Experience” or “Dave-Edited Draft1”. It could be anything. What makes finding relevant information so challenging is that the web is made up of 100% user-generated content. So, what are some strategies to uncover these additional candidates?

Google Starts to Enhance Its Image Search Google set the stage to search beyond keywords with their 2006 acquisition of Neven Vision, a software company that specializes in image recognition. Since 2006, Google has been rolling out some of that new technology to enhance its Google Advanced Image Search. Now you can filter down results by Color, Type, Image Size, and more.

New Google Image Search Feature Targets Human Capital One feature that is particularly useful to recruiters is the “Face” Type Filter. As recruiters, so much of our time is spent trying to find information that would pertain to “people” or potential candidates. Recruiters accomplish this by looking for keywords like “bio” or “sales team”. With Google’s “Face” Type Filter, recruiters can kick back and let Google’s advanced facial recognition software do all the heavy lifting. Here’s how to use it to uncover “hidden” candidates.

Google Advanced Image Search http://images.google.com/

1

Step 1:

Put together a string of job keywords (titles, skills, etc.), then run it on Google Images. Geographic keywords work well; state, city, address, zipcode or phone area code. Google NumRange does not work in Image Search.

In this example, I am searching for a “sales manager” in NY in the Phone Area code 212

Run the search, and as you can see the results won’t be very relevant at first.

2

Step 2:

Click “Show Options”. Then select the “Face” filter.

3

The results look like this:

4

You’ll notice that the Face filter usually does a good job of pulling up “people only” so there’s no need to use any other commands like “inurl:bio” or anything like that.

Due Diligence; What Are Some Ways Image Search is Helpful?

I’ve found that text-only resume searches are great for people with technical backgrounds such as software developers, senior execs, UI architects, etc. But for positions that are not as tech savvy, such as real estate, insurance, and automotive sales, I have found that Image Search is especially helpful.

I recommend trying out some searches with the “Face” Type Filter on. As you comb through the results, be conscious of the URL’s and Text on the page. You’ll start to find that there are a lot of candidates that would be near-impossible to find via a traditional text-based search engine.

Here are some simple strings to try out or Google Images:

  •   insurance agent chicago (IL OR Illinois)
  •  “user experience” (CA OR California)
  •   toyota sales (MN OR Minnesota)
  •  engineer IBM
