The gag is simple: One magic wand, one magic wish. What would you do to change the Talent Acquisition landscape to make it better? We were at HR Tech 2022 asking industry leaders about their opinions on this crazy industry and how to improve it.
Guest Doug Shonrock of Joveo talks with William Tincup about getting to the heart of the candidate experience. Let’s change the narrative that job seekers are assets. Let’s bring this back to supply and demand. It doesn’t need to be more complicated than that.
This #HRTechConf 2022 series was hosted and brought to you by our friends and partners at Joveo!

You’re listening to the RecruitingDaily podcast. We’re recording from HR Tech in Vegas. Thanks to our friends and partners at Jovio, we are talking to some of the best minds in HR and business and digging into the most pressing issues in the workplace, so you don’t have to.
(00:16)
Here’s your host William TinCup.
William Tincup (00:19):
Ladies and gentlemen, this is William Tincup, and we are broadcasting live from Jovio’s Booth at HR Tech. We have Doug here with us. And Doug, would you do us a favor and introduce yourself?
Doug Shonrock (00:28):
Sure.
(00:29)
Doug Shonrock. I am the Candidate Experience director, kind of bringing a new turn to Jovio, trying to go beyond just the distribution and publishing to the candidate experience.
William Tincup (00:41):
Oh, nice.
Doug Shonrock (00:41):
And I think this is going to lead right into the question you’re about to ask me.
William Tincup (00:44):
I am about to ask you this question. But first, I have to give you a magic wand. If you had a magic wand and you could change anything about talent sourcing, what would you change?
Doug Shonrock (00:57):
I would change the entire narrative.
William Tincup (01:00):
Okay.
Doug Shonrock (01:00):
Job seekers are really assets, and that the entire talent acquisition process should be treated as a supply and demand and logistics concept.
William Tincup (01:13):
Right.
Doug Shonrock (01:14):
Because, too often, what happens is job seekers apply to jobs, they end up in a black hole, and they’re stuck on a shelf.
William Tincup (01:21):
Right.
Doug Shonrock (01:22):
And if you were any major company manufacturing something, you would not take your raw material, a job seeker, try to do something with it, and then put it on a shelf forever.
William Tincup (01:31):
Well, I had your wonderful conversation the other day where both sides look at the other side as commodities.
Doug Shonrock (01:37):
Yeah, exactly.
William Tincup (01:38):
And as crazy as the guy said it, it clicked for me. I’m like, “Oh, my God.”
Doug Shonrock (01:44):
So, candidates look at the companies as commodities, and typically, in talent acquisition, we look at them as commodities. So, we got to fix the commodity business.
William Tincup (01:56):
Correct.
Doug Shonrock (01:56):
Because it’s supply and demand.
William Tincup (01:58):
It’s supply and demand.
Doug Shonrock (01:59):
And right now, the job seeker is in control.
William Tincup (02:03):
That is correct. That is correct. And some of the behavior underneath that, the thinking in minutes, seconds, and hours, I don’t think that ever changes, going forward.
Doug Shonrock (02:11):
Correct.
William Tincup (02:12):
But Doug, thank you so much for your time and your wisdom. I absolutely appreciate you.
Doug Shonrock (02:17):
Enjoyed it.
William Tincup (02:17):
All right, my friend.
Doug Shonrock (02:18):
Thank you.
